Running for Rugby
As part of efforts to further generate funds to support rugby development in the Lao PDR, the Lao Rugby Federation organised a gruelling 390 kilometre fundraising run from Vientiane to Luang Prabang over 3 days from the 26 - 28 September, 2009.
Players from the 4 Lao domestic teams ran in relay for the entire distance carrying a match ball to Luang Prabang ahead of the inaugural Luang Prabang derby, which marks the launching of the LRF’s rugby development activities in the city on the 28th November, 2009.
The run raised just under 3,000 USD for rugby development activities and provided the sport with some excellent exposure along the route from Vientiane to Luang Prabang, with great enthusiasm shown for what the players achieved. For media from the event, please visit our run diary page here.
How Did it Work?
12 players from the 4 domestic Lao teams ran in relay over three days, carrying a match ball from That Luang in Vientiane to Phu Si in Luang Prabang. The team covered 390 kilometres in just under 45 hours over 3 days covering some difficult terrain, particularly on the afternoon of the second days as the team worked through blistering temperatures to climb for around 5 hours up to Phoukhoun.
What Next?
Running for Rugby is part of the LRF’s commitment to raising funds from as diverse a base as possible, as well as supporting the LRF to raise awareness about the sport of rugby union in the Lao PDR. The LRF is committed to undertaking one high-profile funding event every year and is already looking for a bigger and better event in 2010.
