Doe, is a 17-year old boy from Vientiane Province. He recently moved to Vientiane Capital with his family to study at a high school there. When he was in Vientiane Province, he joined the Pass It Back program and slowly discovered that he had a passion for rugby, even though he never knew about the sport before. After completing a designated number of sessions, he participated in his first competition at the end of the season. Doe was very excited and shared, “When I went to compete, I felt very nervous and pressured because it was my first competition. But, this competition helped me build friendships with other teams as well as within my own team.” At the competition, Doe’s team won first place. Doe was very happy and plans to train hard and encourage his teammates to do the same in order to defend their title. The effort he put into training was not in vain because his team was able to secure first place for three consecutive years. After playing tag rugby for a while, Doe wanted to challenge himself by playing contact rugby. He became interested in contact rugby after watching video clips online. Not long after, Pern and Tae (key partners in Vientiane Province) created a contact rugby team in Vientiane province. After Pern came to teach contact rugby skills, Doe thought to himself, “This is what I want to try! I wanted to try it because I have only watched video clips, but now I can play it myself. After trying to play it, I was able to gain new experiences.” Doe wanted to become a rugby club player in order to use the skills that he learned in the Pass It Back curriculum, build new friendships, and learn more about the sport.

After that, Doe moved to Vientiane Capital with his family. However, he did not want to let go of his passion for rugby. Therefore, he resumed playing contact rugby in a club in Vientiane Capital and decided to join the Pass It Back program as a coach. Doe wanted to become a coach in order to help out his family and help children have the same experience as he did. He wanted children to learn and use the skills that they learn in competitions. Doe shared he reason for becoming a coach, “I wanted to improve myself and become more talkative and sociable because in the past I was a quiet person and did not like to socialise.”

After being selected as a coach, Doe changed a lot. For example, his thinking changed. During the training, he had to plan a session for the test. As he was planning, he thought of how he could pass the test. He asked his friends to role-play as players in order for him to practice coaching. He thought of the children that he will teach and whether they will have fun and understand what he teaches. He also used the experience he gained from training, “I coach children in a friendly and approachable manner. I do not act superior because I am a coach, I talk to players like they are my younger siblings in order for them to have fun”. Doe also has a considerable amount of knowledge because he was previously a player. This helps him to know how to make the games fun and ensure that the players use the skills they learned. Learning life skills has helped Doe improve his speaking skills. Life skill discussions are very important for players to learn new life skills because in addition to playing rugby, they also get to learn many life skills whether that is basic rules, correct communication, helping others, and gender roles. Compared to when Doe was training, he is now more confident in speaking up and approaching others. He has become a leader who facilitates life skill discussions for his players.
